Never Married

During his life, Thomas Hector Donald Duck went overseas and apparently he visited the Holy Land.  While there he was very attracted to some rock he saw.  He had some shipped home to Casino and eventually decided that when he died, he wanted his grave covered with a monument designed from the rock.  His grave stands out from all others at the Casino Cemetery.  It is rather large and colourful.  Two of his sisters are buried either side of him and their graves have similar stone on them.

This information is courtesy of his relatives who where passing through Casino on holidays.

Newspaper article:

Arthur Thomas Gilbert

There passed away on the 10th inst. at the home of Mr W Gilbert, at the age of 77 years.  Although the late Mr Gilbert has been suffering for some time, news of his sudden death came as a shock to the residents of Bullahdelah and district.

A very regrettable feature of the sad event was the fact that the services of the doctor could not be obtained as a result of the swollen nature of the Myall River.  Indeed, for this reason the deceased had a few hours prior to his death to be moved from his residence as it was feared that the flood waters would inundate the dwelling, as has happened on other occasions in heavy continuous rain.

The late Mr Gilbert sat conversing with his wife and other relatives quite normally two hours before he was taken suddenly ill and passed away within a few minutes.

Born at Rosenthal in 1870, the late Mr Gilbert spent all his life in the district.  The son of the late Arthur John Gilbert and Mary Ann Gilbert (nee Duck), he married in the year 1925 Miss Clarinda Watkins, who is left to mourn her sad loss.

Also left to mourn his passing are two brothers, viz. Mr Edward Gilbert, of Murwillumbah, and Francis Gilbert, Dorrigo, and one sister, Miss Mary Ann Gilbert, of Rosenthal.

Being of quiet nature and kindly disposition, the Mr Gilbert was highly respected by all who knew him.  A Christian man and until ill-health prevented, was a keen churchman and seldom failed to attend service.  Enjoying a very retentive memory, he could tell of many incidents in the early days of the Myall River.

The cortege moved off from Mr W Gilbert's residence at 2:30 on the 11th December, and the remains were laid to rest in the C of E portion of the Bulahdelah cemetery.  The Rev Mr Pitcher officiated at the graveside, and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of MR Mervyn Richards.

The sympathy of the district is extended to the sorrowing widow and sister and other relatives.

Marriage Notes for CHARLES DUCK and MARY TOMS:

[Vins Family1.FTW]

Charles was born in Calais, France on 10 August 1845 and came to Australia in 1848 aged 3yrs aboard the "Agincourt" with his parents Thomas aged 38yrs and Elizabeth aged 34yrs.  They sailed from Gravesend Eng on 16 June 1848 and came as Government Assisted Immigrants, arriving Port Jackson on Saturday 7 October 1848. (Thomas and Elizabeth Duck were originally lace makers from Nottingham England).  His early years were spent in the Gresford area.  It is thought that as a young man he worked in vineyards on the Hunter River.

Charles was married at Myall River on 28/2/1867 to Mary Ann Toms who was born at Cory Vale, Allyn River on 5/7/1847.  She was a daughter of Samuel Toms and his wife Charlotte Besgrove.  Samuel Toms was a Blacksmith, born in 1817 in Somerset, England and died on 26/12/1867 at Myall River.  Samuel Toms' father, Joseph Toms was also a blacksmith in England.  Charlotte Besgrove was born in England and died in 1885 at Bulahdelah and was the daughter of George Besgrove.

He and Mary Ann farmed on the Myall River growing potatoes and corn, but floods wiped out their crops year after year so they packed up their family and belongings on two bullock wagons and moved north to the Herons Creek area. It took about 6-8 weeks for the journey, the year was about 1891. They settled at Bob's Creek, east of Herons Creek and Charles became a timber worker, cutting sleepers and fence posts.  He also built houses in the area.

He is said to have had a lovely singing voice and was often asked to sing at family gatherings.

Mary Ann died suddenly in the garden on 10/4/1917 aged 69.  Charles lived on with his daughter Alcie for a further 11 years.  He died on 18/10/1928 aged 83 year.  Both Charles and Mary Ann are buried in Herons Creek Cemetery, C. of E. section.

They had 14 Children

Marriage Notes for EDWARD DUCK and MARY WILSON:

[Vins Family1.FTW]

Edward married Mary Ann at Yarraford Bridge, Glen Innes, according to the rites of the Church of England.  Edward was a sawyer.  On the marriage certificate Edward signed his name, while Mary Ann marked hers with a cross, as did her sister Catherine Wilson.  The other witness was William James O'Hara signed his name.

The Duck family had a sawmill at Glen Elgin and the mountain nearby became unofficially known as Duck's Mountain.  Ole timers still talk of Duck's mountain.  It is now in a National Park and difficult to get to.

The vicinity of the sawmill was owned at one time by Colonel White and when it was subdivided the paddocks were named after the people who owned that particular area.  These names are still used today.

Family members tell the story of how Edward Duck together with a Mr. Drake and a Mr. Swan built a bridge over Beardy River outside Glen Innes - so a Duck, Drake and Swan built the bridge.  It has been established that a firm built the bridge and that Suck being a sawyer probably supplied the timber and that two of the workmen were possibly named Drake and Swan.  There were no records of the employees.

Edward Duck held a timber licence from 1879 - 1887

Edward held land from 1907 - 1922.   Edward died in 1914, so perhaps this land was still in his name until 1922.

Marriage Notes for FRANCIS DUCK and ANNIE EDWARDS:

[Vins Family1.FTW]

Francis was 36 years old when he was married and Annie was 18 years old.  They built a shingle roofed home on their property at Markwell, Myall River and it was there that their family was born.

There were sad times form Francis.  He lost one son at aged 11 years.  His second daughter died at 2 years when her nightie caught fire and she was burnt dreadfully.  He tried to beat out the flames, but couldn't save his daughter's life.  Then in 1898 when baby Frank was born, tragedy struck again as his wife, Annie died soon after at the age of 28 years, leaving her husband and children.

Francis carried on living at Markwell.  He raised his children with the help of his sister, Emma Barry, and a housekeeper.  Francis was quite religious and read from the big Family Bible.  He also had Church meetings in his home.  The oldest son, at about 20 years, left home and went to Queensland and lost all contact with his family.

In his later years, Francis went to Kempsey to help his son's, Frank, first wife raise her four sons.  He died there in 1929 and is buried in Kempsey cemetery.
